How to Get Older Versions of macOS Server

Note: I did this in December 2017, so caveats if Apple changes how it works.

1. Buy the latest version on the latest OS that's out. I used the App Store on a machine running High Sierra, which is OS X 10.13 to make the initial purchase. The older versions are then free.

2. Once you've done that, open the App Store on your machine running the older OS. I downloaded on 10.11 and 10.10. App Store will ask if you want to download an earlier version.

Just in case, make a copy of the app. If you want to go really far back, do it on other versions of the OS, but I think in this example most stuff that would run 10.9 would run 10.10 and 10.11 so about the only reason might be to migrate data from an early server that won't go directly to the latest version so you have to step it through OS and Server versions.

Apple, could you make this easier?

Need a Mac Mini? Amazon sells older versions here, which are fine for a home server: http://amzn.to/2B4Ov55

Backstory:

I bought a Mac Mini 2009 to use as a caching server via Squidman and the built in caching service. It's nice to have in-house DNS and some other stuff because my internet sucks. Anything I can do to speed it up, and link bind via Speedify, etc. helps.

I'm using a Core 2 Duo 2.0 ghz with 120GB and 2GB of RAM.

P.S. If you got here to read about Speedify in some sort of similar situation, it works.

I have two T-Mobile iPhones with the free slow USB tethering that provide .6-1.2 MBPS per second. This doesn't sound like much but my third link is the unlimited speed hotspot that costs $25 extra per month. Right now my peak speed is 8Mbps with about 8% of that coming from the two slow links.

It's free, I'll take it. :)

The reason the unlimited is so slow is because I am throttled. I have a lower priority, so I get the leftover bandwidth. But for something like $50 a month it is decent. There is no wired option, not even DSL and satellite is capped etc.

I *MAY* look at satellite in the future and link bind the two slower connections for gaming latency issues but up until now it hasn't been price attractive, and I hope I can get at least DSL before two more years, which is the typical satellite contract term.

But I digress.
