TiVo Series 3 HD Hard drive upgrade report

This is a report from a 'friend' who had a TiVo Series 3 HD with a failing drive.

Fortunately with WinMFS, this is a super easy replacement. Keep your old drive for any future exchanges with TiVo. Copying all your data to the new drive takes less than 2 hours.

It appears WD made these to last about three years, as mine had a 22 Sep 2006 manufacture date.

I bet TiVo gets suspicious if your unit hasn't failed after three years. :P

At any rate, he replaced it with a Hitachi 1 terabyte drive. This gives 1244 hrs of standard def and 140hrs of HD.

It's also faster but not as quiet. I don't think you'll hear it over the TV but it might be a factor for audiophiles.

There is probably a way to turn acoustic mode on as with many drives.

Overall ranking: Easy. If you've done this for a computer, you can do it on a TiVo.
